Background of the study
Digital codeswitching is a common linguistic phenomenon in Nigerian online interactions, particularly evident in Facebook group chats. Users often alternate between English, indigenous languages, and pidgin to convey nuance, humor, and cultural identity (Ibrahim, 2024). This study evaluates how digital codeswitching functions in Facebook group chats by analyzing the patterns, motivations, and outcomes of language alternation. In these chats, codeswitching serves as a communicative tool that reflects speakers’ social identities and their adaptability to different conversational contexts. The dynamic and informal nature of group chats provides a rich context for examining how speakers negotiate meaning, express solidarity, and navigate social hierarchies through language. Digital platforms have accelerated codeswitching practices, leading to the emergence of hybrid expressions and novel linguistic forms that challenge traditional language boundaries (Okoro, 2023). This research documents these practices, exploring the role of digital communication in fostering linguistic flexibility and cultural creativity in Nigerian online communities (Afolabi, 2023).
Statement of the problem
While codeswitching is widely observed in Nigerian Facebook group chats, there is limited research comparing its function and structure within these digital spaces. Existing studies often focus on either formal or offline settings, leaving a gap in understanding the nuances of digital codeswitching. This lack of comprehensive analysis hampers our understanding of how online environments influence language alternation, and consequently, cultural identity. The study aims to bridge this gap by systematically evaluating codeswitching practices in Facebook group chats and exploring their implications for digital communication (Chukwu, 2024).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth analysis of digital codeswitching in Nigerian social media. The findings will inform linguistic theory and practical communication strategies, enhancing our understanding of multilingualism in online contexts (Ibrahim, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to Facebook group chats in Nigeria and focuses solely on codeswitching practices. It does not consider other forms of digital communication or offline codeswitching.
